One of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious wine shows gets underway in Sydney

Posted on 30 July 2024

Over 1,700 Australian wines will undergo judging this week as the Sydney Royal Wine Show gets underway at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park.

From Monday 29 July to 1st August, 31 expert judges from across Australia will help determine Australia’s best drops with 32 trophies up for grabs for wines that standout amongst the masses.

This year will be the last year the competition will be led by renowned Chair of Judges, Sarah Crowe as she ends her three-year term, but there is still plenty of wine to be tasted before then.

“It has been a joy to play such an integral role in a strong and historical capital city wine show and I am looking forward to seeing what producers have to offer this year,” Crowe said.

“As a whole, the competition aim is to benchmark entries, provide meaningful feedback and ultimately find our most favourite wines to award trophies to. So, the harder it is, the happier I am since it shows the strength and expertise in our large and diverse viticulture regions.

“I wish the best of luck to all Exhibitors.”

Hosted at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, judging will award champion, gold, silver and bronze medals based on a point system and will select 32 exceptional wines for the relevant trophies, including the coveted Tucker Seabrook Perpetual Trophy for Best Wine in Show.

The Sydney Royal Wine Show first judged Australian wine back in 1826 and today the competition continues to recognise Australian wineries and winemakers for excellence while also playing an important role in supporting the evolution of the industry through product improvement.

By winning a medal or trophy, wineries can better benchmark themselves against peers and market their products to consumers.

Winners of the Sydney Royal Wine Show will be announced at an award ceremony on Thursday 15 August and the general public will be able to have their own taste-test of the 1,700 plus wines at the Grape, Grain & Grain festival on September 22.
