NSW dairy producer wins RAS Foundation-backed Nuffield Australia Farming Scholarship

Posted on 04 September 2024

The RAS Foundation is making a significant investment towards agricultural innovation and sustainability through its sponsorship of 2025 Nuffield Farming Scholarship recipient, and dairy industry leader, Campbell Chesworth.

Awarded by Nuffield Australia, Nuffield Farming Scholarships are designed to provide the next generation of agricultural leaders with the means to undertake research that will develop their practical farming knowledge and management skills, as well as positively impact their business and the industry at large.

A worthy scholarship recipient, Chesworth has been championing sustainability practices through the family’s vertically integrated dairy farm business, Chesworth Dairy Partnership and The Little Big Dairy Company, which together manage the supply chain from paddock to end consumer.

Chesworth believes that embracing circular economy opportunities is the key to building sustainability practices into farms’ core business procedures, and a way to combat the increasing consumer and regulatory demands affecting Australian livestock industries.

“To retain its right to farm, Australian Dairy will need to adopt innovative on-farm strategies to meet welfare & sustainability expectations”, Chesworth said.

“The Dairy Industry has a history of leading industry change and is often at the forefront of embracing new technologies and ways of working. In recent years, on a global level, dairy has started to embrace interventions to reduce, reuse and recycle farm inputs leading to reduced costs, and yielding financial and conservation benefits.

“The purpose of my work will be to determine how circular economy innovations can pave the way for a more resilient, profitable and sustainable Australian dairy industry”.

As a 2025 Nuffield Scholarship recipient, Chesworth will receive $40,000 towards his research, and plans to travel to Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, and the United States of America to research water conservation and sustainability, drought resilience, and renewable fuel source, biogas.

Chesworth is looking forward to sharing his findings through industry bodies and their networks upon his return, as well as integrating new ideas and methods into the family business to ensure it will thrive for generations to come.
