A different type of fortune

Posted on 22 March 2019

With a passion for sport and performance, Jarrod is perfectly poised to compete in the challenging field of journalism and hopes to bring the most important issues to the forefront of people’s minds. In 2018, he won the ABC’s Heywire competition and attended a summit in Canberra to give voice to those suffering from Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination.

He also co-founded an education project aimed at preventing domestic violence in rural and regional areas. In 2019, Jarrod will be participating in the Ma and Morley Program. He will work on a project to help provide equity and justice for all peoples.

Jarrod recently completed his Bachelor of Communication at the University of Newcastle with a double major in journalism and public relations and is about to commence Honours. Jarrod chose journalism as a career path because he wants to contribute to the public good on a daily basis. He believes the key to good journalism in an unpredictable future is finding the right balance between satisfying a digital audience’s needs and staying true to old fundamentals like truthfulness, accuracy and fairness.

Jarrod will be presented with his Award at a ceremony at the 2019 Sydney Royal Easter Show. He will also receive a $10,000 cash prize along with practical work experience in the RAS Media Team at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Fairfax Agricultural Media at The Land newspaper and with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in their Brisbane newsroom.
