Meeting the Royals Bush Tele Feature
A group of lucky Showgoers and members of the Show family enjoyed once-in-a-lifetime brushes with Royalty during yesterday’s visit from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The first stop for William and Kate was the District Exhibits, where the much-loved couple slowly made their way along the front of the display, stopping to talk to five lucky representatives from each exhibit before a crowd of onlookers and media.
Kay Holst from Western District chatted to the Royal couple and said they showed particular interest in the Exhibit’s helicopter, which is fashioned from locally-sourced canola, sorghum, millet and green peas.
“William especially was very interested in the helicopter, I guess being a helicopter pilot,” Kay said. “He was asking us how it was made and then he said he wished he had his phone to take a photo of it. The last thing he said was that he was going to take it home for George.”
William and Kate then headed to the Arts & Crafts Pavilion, leaving many in the Dome, including South East Queensland exhibitor Harold Schiller, with only nice words to say about the couple.
“Very nice, very pleasant, very courteous, very good,” Harold said.
Seven-year-old Sophie Rogers attracted the Duchess with a sign that read, “When I was four, mummy and I dressed up as brides to watch your wedding. I think you looked beautiful.” Catherine spoke to the young fan and posed for photos.
Sophie, her mum Jo and other members of the Rogers family rose at the crack of dawn to stake their spot at the front of the crowd inside the flower section at the Arts and Crafts Pavilion.
Sophie said the pair talked about their shared love of flowers and a gifted bouquet.
“I told her the favourite part of the bouquet and where was my favourite place in this Show,” Sophie said. “My favourite place is here with the flowers and there was a pink flower in the bouquet and I really liked that.”
