RASC Mission to Botswana
Overview
Established in 1957, the RAS Commonwealth serves as a key hub for agricultural societies across the Commonwealth, fostering collaboration and innovation.
Its origins date back to a vision proposed in 1956 by Samuel Hordern, then President of the RAS of NSW, to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who supported the initiative.
This connection was highlighted at the RAS’ Bicentennial Opening Dinner in 2022, where HRH The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, recognised its significance.
The first overseas conference of the RAS Commonwealth was held in Sydney, attended by Prince Philip, who served as President and Patron for over 50 years, noting that “the RAS of NSW played probably the most important part in the foundation of the Commonwealth body.”
Join us in continuing to promote collaboration and innovation in agriculture through the RAS Commonwealth.

The RAS Commonwealth Agricultural Conference in Edinburgh celebrated agricultural progress and collaboration among diverse nations. Since its founding in 1957, the RAS Commonwealth has been pivotal for agricultural societies, and the 2024 conference provided a platform for over 250 delegates from 54 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, and India, to share knowledge and forge partnerships. This gathering highlighted the global significance of agriculture and the shared challenges faced by Commonwealth nations.
The pre-conference tour in Perth focused on sustainability, allowing delegates to explore various enterprises dedicated to environmental stewardship. Highlights included visits to Lucinda Russell’s racing yard, the John Sutton Institute, and Arbikie Distillery, which aims to be the first distillery powered by green hydrogen. The tour culminated at the Royal Highland Show, showcasing sustainable agricultural practices and reinforcing Scotland’s commitment to a sustainable future.
During the main conference, sessions centered on themes of relevance, adaptability, sustainability, and connectivity in agriculture. Engaging discussions featured leaders addressing the importance of bridging the urban-rural divide and achieving net-zero emissions in food production. The conference concluded with a Gala Dinner at the Royal Highland Showground, celebrating Scottish cuisine and the vital role of agricultural shows in educating communities and fostering connections.
